Hello. I found your site through Watkins, and I was wondering if you could tell me a bit about how Watkins is like. I am interested in moving to Tennessee for college and Watkins is one of the schools that I am looking at.
If you dont mind, could you answer a few questions for me?
What are the classes like?
Is there a good darkroom in your opinion?
Do you study more film photography or digital photography?
Do you need your buy own cameras, and if so, which ones will you suggest?
Thank you for your time,
Mika
hey mika sorry this took sooo long to back mid terms were crazy. ok classes are all bearable in the sence that some of your gen ed classes drag on a bit but their good to learn. as far as studio classes go they are all amazing. i think Watkins limits their classes to 25 people per studio class but the max i’ve had is 17 so we all get allot of help from our teachers whenever we need it. the faculty is generally interested in your well being and your career. so they are always there when you need them. Watkins actually boasts the largest darkroom this side of the Mississippi. and it is well equipped with two kinds of enlargers for your preference, “bestseller and Saunders.” and i believe they print up to an 11′X17″ for anything larger we use digital printers by scanning our negatives. the first semester you’ll be shooting 35mm, you will need your own slr. i use and totally advise the cannon A1 but any 35mm slr will work. the school also rents these out if you just cant get one but its a big hassle that will adversely effect your work. from what i’ve seen it takes about a year for the people who aren’t willing to work really hard to leave Watkins and from that point on it seems to get more intense but in the best way possible. I feel as though i’m getting my moneys worth i guess is what i’m saying. just come prepared to work and be sincere about your career goals in life thats what it takes to make it in the world of photography and so they try really hard to build you up for it.
in addition there are studio fees and you will also need a medium format camera that shoots either 120 or 220 rolls of film. “when you search for these this will be explained.” just plan for about 600 a semester for books and supplies for the first couple. because this is when you build your essential kit and so on. i know it seems like allot but this number could go down. i’m just playing it really safe.we rely heavily on film even though were scanning them and editing with photoshop because it is paramount that you take the actual time that is needed for each shot. instead of taking a thousand pictures and only getting 1 usable one, you take 25 and get 10. we haven’t even started lighting yet so im a bit nervous and really excited all at the same time. so i hope i answered your questions, if you would like any additional info just write back. my name is jason reed and i do work the preview days so if you come to one be sure to say hi.
